As the school year came to an end, the children worked hard preparing for and completing their final exams. Staff at the sponsorship office spent two days distributing flour, cooking oil, and soap. The children also received sport clothes. The supplies brought great relief to families. As one parent shared, “When the children are in school, they receive meals there. Now that they will be at home, providing enough food becomes much more difficult. This support came at exactly the right time.”
The past few months have included Vacation Bible School, tutoring, field trips, a training for youth on relationships, and a back-to-school meeting for the parents. The office is a hub of activity where children are welcome to learn, play, study, ask questions, seek advice, and be creative. When they visit the office, many of the children love to spend time drawing.
The summer also featured exciting day trips and retreats. The 6-to-10-year-olds enjoyed an amusement park and the 11-to-15-year-olds spent time at a water park. On their overnight retreats, older teenagers also visited the water park while college students shared a boat ride and rode horses. Then, special speakers shared testimonies and devotions followed by deep reflection about God’s purpose for their lives. These four trips gave the children time to step away from daily life and have space for thinking, friendship, laughter, adventure, and countless new memories. For Ethiopian 12th-graders, summer brings the national university entrance exam, an important test that determines what options students have for their future studies. As the exam approached, our directors Fikadu and Rahel met with the sponsored 12th-graders to help them prepare. Fikadu encouraged the group to put their trust in God while Rahel reminded them to balance hard work with adequate rest.
